Stateline towns
created by mapguy Mail
These stateline town names are portmanteus - in other words, these toponyms were created by combining letters or syllables from the names of the adjoining states. On this map, "Town pair" means two towns with the same name that form a single community straddling a state line (such as Texhoma OK/TX). "Tri-state" means a town named for three states (like Kenova WV), and "Bi-state" means a town named for two states (like Kanorado KS). The "Special" category is for unique or noteworthy examples. The "Dubious" category contains locales that were not georeferenced in this mapping application, so their locations may be incorrect, and it's unlikely these names are still in local usage anyway. This is a cartographic supplement for my webpage dealing with the topic.
