7 foot, coffin shaped...opening almost looks like a pedestrian walkway; other than it goes dark pretty quick. The homeless dudes around the bridge literally screamed at us and I was convinced we were going to be stepping over some dead tweekers in the tunnel--but nothing happened, in a good way and in a bad way. Nothing to write home about other than the instant when you pop out at the other side and have the "where the hell are we?" moment.

Some 3,100 or more tons of ore were produced, averaging about 1.0 oz. Au/T, 12 oz. Ag/T and minor Cu and Pb. Several 100 tons of high-grade molybdenum ore were shipped in 1916, which was mined from a stope 20 feet high, 40 feet long, and 6 to 10 feet wide (the 'molybdenite' stope).

The mine portal and most drifts and crosscuts are in the Cretaceous formation, which consists of bedded arkosic sandstones & shales. The oreshoots lie along the axis of a south-plunging syncline.

Workings include several inclined shafts, tunnels, and winzes to a depth of nearly 300 feet. The main incline is 125 feet deep and dips 40ºSW. They also include 2,600 feet of drifts and crosscuts, 260 feet of inclined winzes and many stopes plus an adit. This mine worked intermittently from the late 1870's to 1961 and has produced over 90,000 tons of ore averaging over 4% Cu and 0.5 oz. Ag/T.

The most extensive work on the Buckeye-Black Oxide vein are adjacent to the Buckeye shaft which was sunk by the United Globe Mines Co. on the outcrop in the gulch west of Buckeye Mountain. On the west side of the gulch, three adits explore the vein for about 1,400 feet SW of the shaft. There are also three adits that were driven northeastward from the east side of the gulch. No records of these latter adits are available.

On the 100 level both walls of the vein are in Troy quartzite. The 200 level extends 1,800 feet SW of the shaft and about 1,000 feet NE. In the vicinity of the shaft the level is between the offset upper contacts of the diabase sill and Troy quartzite. The hanging wall of the vein is diabase and the footewall is quartzite. FAther southwest both walls are quartzite, and northeast of the shaft are diabase. For most of its extent, the 400 level, the deepest level of the mine, was driven in the diabase sill.

Ore shipped to the smelter averaged approximately 0.012 oz. Au/T, 6.7 oz. Ag/T, 12% Pb, 4%Zn, and less than 0.1% C.

This mine started production very recently, 1991 to be exact. It is fairly deep so only SRT access would be possible. Because it is so recent it should be safer than much older mines due to less aging and government regulations.

Follow the trail south from the Teepees past the western village and take it up the hill. It's about a ten minute hike to the top where you'll see the mine entrance. Someone cut a hole in the chicken mesh stuff so access is easy. If you follow the trail up farther you'll see a ventilation, shaft which could be accessed with the right equipment.

The rumour was that it was possible to go through the entire mine and come out the back of this small mountain and be over looking some lake, I never made it that far and so have not verified this.

Watch out for bats, harmless, but they can be quite startling if you wake them.

On the NE corner of 51st Ave and Buckeye Rd. are a bunch of huge old cotton storage buildings. The property is all fenced off and has for sale signs posted. I have not checked them out other than a drive by a few times. However, they look unguarded and super easy entry. There are also external ladders that angle up to the roof area where it appears to be a loft of some sort, but also looks really unsafe. Your best bet is to go late night during the week because the place is just dead around there....all industrial. During the day, it might be tricky because it is very busy around the area. On the SE corner of 35th Ave and Buckeye Rd. there is an abandoned warehouse. It has chainlink around the perimeter, but late night easy access. Depending on your own personal "philosophy" on when to explore, here is some info about the area.... the area is very busy during the daytime hours, but very late at night (even into the 12am, 1am, etc.) it is dead. The El Gran is close by (meaning busy partiers/activity), so Friday and Saturday might be out.... but then again the Phoenix PD has their plates full on the weekends. A quote from a Phoenix cop I spoke to "we have at least 20 in the que when we sign on on Friday and Saturday nights, and at least 20-30 in the que when we sign off the shift". In other words, if it is loud noise, or minor disturbances, Phx PD has their hands full in domestic violence calls, armed robbery, violent calls....they don't have time, and place stuff like noise complaint items on the low priority list. A very neat old home and store. Very run down with little to no roof. It is now part of a city park so they do maintain it. Very easily accessible especially if you are worried about getting caught.

This is the actual location of Swansea. An icon, with pictures, appears on the map east of Florence. This is a fantastic ghost town, with several standing buildings. About 28 miles of gravel road that can be navigated in a passenger car. Worth the trip. There are also a couple picnic tables and campsites.

A lot of the skaters know about this tunnel, it runs for a few miles and should end up in a local grocery store. It's part of a chain of tunnels (which unfortunately arent marked on the map at this time). Ask a local skater in the park about 300ft east before attempting, the tunnel does have paths that split and will go for a lot longer than you'd like if you take the wrong path.

It should be worth noting two kids actually died in this tunnel during flash flooding. It gets much narrower as you go further in, so this becomes a serious concern. Many kids attempt this unharmed however, but expect to be in pitch darkness for a few miles, and be very careful of the weather.

The Bannie Mine is located in the Lynx Creek area. The mine consists of three horizontal shafts and one vertical shaft. The main shaft is approximately 200 yards in depth with side shafts around 50 to 100 yards. There is a partial cave-in at the entrance that requires some crawling to get into the mine.

The Climax Mine has 3 horizontal levels and an unknown number of vertical shafts. The beginning of the main horizontal shaft is very large with 4 sub-tunnels leading off in different directions. The mine is in good condition and has many wooden structures and even a wooden bridge. You must walk across a wooden tressel through part of the mine which is a rush in itself. 4-wheel drive is required to reach this mine.

The Queen Bee Mine is located in the Black Hills in Yavapai County. Only a short drive from HWY 89 is required to reach the Yeager Mining Claims. The Queen Bee Mine is part of a series of mines inside the Yeager Claim boundary. Other mines inside include the Yeager Mine, Yeager Canyon Mine, and the Grey Copper Shaft. The Yeager Mine main shaft was slightly inclined to about 1300 feet. Unfortunately the Yeager Mine main shafts have been demolished for obvious safety reasons. Only photos remain of the monsterous operation. A few horizontal shafts are still open, including the Queen Bee Mine as you see here. Very interesting mineral formations throughout the mine.

One of the earliest mines, producing sporadically some 7,000 tons of ore averaging about 6% Cu, 1 oz. Ag/T and minor Pb from the 1880's to 1920. Produced 500,000 pounds Cu valued at $95,000 (period values)(1883).

Suspected of serving terminal 4 of the airport. Evidence of this is storm drain manhole covers on the taxi ways of terminal 4. they are directly inline with this drain.
Could even serve surrounding areas.


This outfall appears to be gated.
Also, the drain opening is at most, 30 feet from the direct center of the landing flight path and only around hundred feet from the runway. Therefor entry is highly dangerous.

This property was located in 1880 by Messrs. Dennis O'Brien and William Tweed. Serious mining started about 1905. The workings go to the 908 foot level but the deposits were drilled deeper. There were 5 shafts including the No. 3 (main shaft)(verticle, 3-compartment to the 908 foot level), the Hackberry shaft, the Christmas shaft, the No. 4 shaft, plus one additional shaft. The initial claims proved to be on the San Carlos Indian Reservation and were declared invalid. In December, 1902, that portion of the reservation was restored to public domain by executive order and the claims were relocated on Christmas evening by Mr. G.B. Chittenden, hence the name. The mine was later owned by the Inspiration Copper Co. until its closure in January, 1982.
