North Carolina A&T State University has been awarded a grant for an Engineering Research Center (ERC) from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Engineering Research Center grants are among the most prestigious NSF awards, and they represent major investments by NSF in partnership with industry to transform engineering research and education. The centers aim to produce innovative technologies and engineering graduates to significantly enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. economy. The ERC program has made 49 awards since its initiation in 1985 and is making five new awards in 2008. The award to A&T marks the first time that an HBCU has been the lead institution of an ERC. Award funding has been approved at $18 million for the initial five years, with a potential duration of 10 years.

McAbee was assistant vice president of human resources for Duke University and Health System prior to coming to N.C. A&T. She previously served as director of human resources, Magee-WomenÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and regional manager of human resources for ADVO, Inc. McAbee was also an assistant vice president, HR, for Dollar Bank, Corporate Headquarters in Pittsburgh. In addition, she was affiliated with Koppers Company, Inc., Corporate Headquarters, in Pittsburgh, as manager of professional employment, supervisor of professional employment, supervisor of office and administrative employment and a sales representative for the Forest Products Division.

McAbee is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, a former Pittsburgh Urban League Board member and a Parent and Child Guidance Center Executive Board member. She is a former Pittsburgh Regional Engineering Program Board of Directors member and a former Middle Atlantic Placement Association Executive Board member.

An honors graduate of Spelman College, McAbee received TQA, QAT and VOC instruction certification from Organizational Dynamics, Inc. She has participated in Customer Service Leadership Training from The Disney Institute and Fuqua School of Business & Coach K Leadership Training at Duke University.

McNair Hall is named for Dr. Ronald E. McNair, A&T graduate, astronaut and physicist. Ron McNair will be remembered as one of the seven astronauts who died in the space shuttle Challenger accident on January 28, 1986. McNair Hall houses the College of Engineering which was constructed in 1987.

The auditorium was constructed in 1939 and named for Richard Berry Harrison who portrayed ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…â€œDe LawdÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚Â in Green Pastures, a dramatic play written in 1929. During the summer for many years, Mr. Harrison taught drama and directed plays on A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s campus.

The dedication ceremony and grand opening were held for the 220,000 square feet building on August 10, 2001. Through A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s University Foundation, Aggie Suites was financed with bonds approved by voters in 2000. The five wings in the residence hall are named in honor of Dr. Alvin V. Blount, Lt. Colonel Thurmon L. Deloney, Anne Graves Kornegay, Obrie Smith and the late Edward R. Zane.

Scott Hall which was demolished in 2004. Scott Hall will be replaced with four new structures totaling 840 beds and over 270,000 square feet. Scott Hall was named for W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina. It was completed in 1951 at a cost of nearly $2,000,000, the largest sum ever appropriated to the university. The red brick structure housed 1,100 male students and included 505 rooms and 3 apartments for faculty supervisors.

Scott Hall was built to relieve the shortage of housing for male students. At that time there were 2300 male students at A&T. One thousand of the young men were living in dormitories and another thousand were living in the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD) barracks. The ORD barracks had housed the men since World War II. The ORD was home to many thousands of G.I.s for some interval during World War II as well as home to veterans returning from the war.

In May 1969, the National Guard rolled onto A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s campus and sprayed one side of Scott Hall with bullets that left Willie Grimes, a student dead and two students wounded. The damaged wall with the bullet holes of Scott Hall have been preserved as a memorial so future students will know what happened. The window and frame of Room 2128 have been salvaged and placed in the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in downtown Greensboro. This is where Ezell Blair, Jr. (Jibreel Khazan) and Joe McNeil two of the A&T Four lived. Franklin McCain and the late David Richmond regularly met in Room 2128 with McNeil and Blair to sometimes do homework and to always discuss issues about equality and civil rights. In this room on January 31, 1960, plans were finalized for the historic sit-in demonstration that took place on February 1, 1960 at the WoolworthÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s lunch counter in Greensboro, NC.

Scott Hall residents have included the A&T Four, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye, A&T and NFL great Elvin Bethea, civil rights activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and entrepreneur Ralph Shelton.

Scott Hall was dedicated at the June 1952 commencement program. Dr. F.D. Bluford was president of the university, H.L. Coble Construction Company, contractor and McMinn and Norfleet, architects. It was razed on Sunday , July 11, 2004.

Completed in the summer of 1895, the Mechanical Building or Crosby Hall was designed by the first president of A&T, John Oliver Crosby. This building used steam heat and gas lighting. It was called the finest structure of its kind in the southern states. The name of the college in 1895 was A and M College for the Colored Race.

The dedication of the Alumni- Foundation Event Center occurred on December 16, 2005. With more than 15,000 square feet of space, the facility is a venue for meetings, conferences and special events. North Carolina A&T University Foundation, Inc. provided funds for the building. A highlight of the center is the 20 x 30 mural, Graduation, by Joseph Holston.

This co-ed facility is part of six new residence halls that accommodate approximately 800 students and stands where the original Scott Hall once stood. Two of the six residence halls were completed in 2004 and the next four were completed in 2005. The village in the name Aggie Village was selected to reflect a spirit of community. Aggie Village was financed with bonds approved by voters in 2000.

Aggie Stadium was completed mid-summer in 1981 and is situated on what was once the football practice field on Sullivan Street. An Aggie alumnus and architect, W. Edward Jenkins, designed the stadium. The stadium has recently undergone renovations including the installation of lights, new sprinkler and drainage systems, and the reconditioning of the playing surface.

This building constructed in 1955 was named for Roscoe Ward, a 1915 graduate of the College. The University once produced its own ice cream and prepared its own milk products in Ward Hall. Ward Hall is now the home of the University Police and Public Safety Administration.

This building constructed in 1974 was named for Frederick Allen Williams, a member of the class of 1931 and a former faculty member and economist. Williams Cafeteria was completely renovated in 2002. The dedication ceremony and grand opening were held for the 220,000 square feet building on August 10, 2001. Through A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s University Foundation, Aggie Suites was financed with bonds approved by voters in 2000. The five wings in the residence hall are named in honor of Dr. Alvin V. Blount, Lt. Colonel Thurmon L. Deloney, Anne Graves Kornegay, Obrie Smith and the late Edward R. Zane.

The Oaks constructed in 1949 was once the official residence of the presidents and chancellors of the University. Dr. Ferdinand Douglas Bluford, third president of the University, and his family were the first residents to live there occupying the house in the early 1950ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s. The house is named "The Oaks" because of the huge oak trees surrounding it. It is now the home of the NC A&T Faculty Club.

Scott Hall which was demolished in 2004. Scott Hall will be replaced with four new structures totaling 840 beds and over 270,000 square feet. Scott Hall was named for W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina. It was completed in 1951 at a cost of nearly $2,000,000, the largest sum ever appropriated to the university. The red brick structure housed 1,100 male students and included 505 rooms and 3 apartments for faculty supervisors.

Scott Hall was built to relieve the shortage of housing for male students. At that time there were 2300 male students at A&T. One thousand of the young men were living in dormitories and another thousand were living in the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD) barracks. The ORD barracks had housed the men since World War II. The ORD was home to many thousands of G.I.s for some interval during World War II as well as home to veterans returning from the war.

In May 1969, the National Guard rolled onto A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s campus and sprayed one side of Scott Hall with bullets that left Willie Grimes, a student dead and two students wounded. The damaged wall with the bullet holes of Scott Hall have been preserved as a memorial so future students will know what happened. The window and frame of Room 2128 have been salvaged and placed in the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in downtown Greensboro. This is where Ezell Blair, Jr. (Jibreel Khazan) and Joe McNeil two of the A&T Four lived. Franklin McCain and the late David Richmond regularly met in Room 2128 with McNeil and Blair to sometimes do homework and to always discuss issues about equality and civil rights. In this room on January 31, 1960, plans were finalized for the historic sit-in demonstration that took place on February 1, 1960 at the WoolworthÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s lunch counter in Greensboro, NC.

Scott Hall residents have included the A&T Four, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye, A&T and NFL great Elvin Bethea, civil rights activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and entrepreneur Ralph Shelton.

Scott Hall was dedicated at the June 1952 commencement program. Dr. F.D. Bluford was president of the university, H.L. Coble Construction Company, contractor and McMinn and Norfleet, architects. It was razed on Sunday , July 11, 2004.

: Garrett House

The Garrett House is named for Frances Garrett, a member of the class of 1920 and one of the first females to graduate from A&T. She willed the house to A&T to begin an endowment for the college. The Garrett house constructed in 1939 was once the Practice Cottage for students in home economics. It now houses the UniversityÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s Media Relations office.

This building constructed in 1955 houses the Army and Air force Reserve Office Training Corps, R.O.T.C. It is named for Captain Robert Campbell who returned to the campus after combat in World War I. Captain Campbell managed Murphy Hall when it was the dining facility on A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s campus.

The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for this residence hall occurred on August 17, 2004. Located on North Benbow Road, the $12 million facility was financed through A&TÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s University Foundation. More than 300 nominations were received for the University sponsored contest to name Pride Hall. The winners were LaToya Thomas, Gwen Evans, Joycelyn maybury, Dr. Edna J. Ragins and Tahira Nyabinghi.

Robeson Theatre was constructed in 1969 and named in honor of Paul Robeson, the actor, singer, writer, and lawyer. The foyer of the theatre was named in honor of Dr. John M. Kilimanjaro, former A&T faculty member and founder and publisher of the Carolina Peacemaker newspaper. The theatre is the home of the award winning Richard B. Harrison Players.

It is a multi-disciplinary academic building that will house the ever-growing need for instructional, laboratory, and faculty departments. Memorial Student Union History
Constructed in 1967, the Memorial Student Union is the main center for social life of students at the University. It houses meeting rooms, conference rooms, student government offices and staff offices. The Union underwent an extensive expansion that included the additions of a food court, an outdoor quad and a ballroom. The ballroom is named for Vernell Stallings, an alumnus and former associate director of the Union. The food court was fittingly named the â€œAggie Sit-Inâ€™ following a contest that was held in colorful murals depicting life at A&T grace the walls. The grand opening of the renovated Union was March 2001.
