A LEARNER driver caught more than six times the legal limit blighted Queen’s Birthday celebrations with police again left disgusted after the long weekend.

The 22-year-old man was nabbed by authorities with an alleged blood-alcohol concentration of .303 per cent at Kurrimine Beach on Saturday night.

He was also issued with traffic offence notices for failing to give way, failure to display an L plate and driving unaccompanied on a learner’s permit.

From Friday to Sunday in Cairns, 11 drink-drivers were charged while 84 drivers where slapped with speeding fines.

Throughout the region from Friday to Sunday, 233 speedsters were caught.

The Far North’s top traffic cop, Insp Bob Waters, said motorists had again angered police and risked the lives of hundreds.
“It is disappointing that amount has been issued for infringement notices and that doesn’t include speed cameras,” he said.

“It just goes to show people are still doing the wrong things on the road.”

On the Cassowary Coast, police caught five drink-drivers in the Kurrimine Beach, Wongaling Beach, Tully and Innisfail areas.

From Babinda to Cardwell, police conducted more than 400 random breath tests over the weekend and also added a new weapon to their traffic enforcement arsenal with patrols in unmarked vehicles.

“Obviously, it’s caught a few people out a little bit,” Innisfail police Insp Dave Tucker said.

The driver of a utility escaped serious injury yesterday when his vehicle left the Bruce Highway and went over an embankment on the approach to the Johnstone River bridge.
