In 1906 A. Stein and Company acquired real estate at 1143 West Congress, erecting the first unit of a five-story plant designed by Alfred S. Alschuler, a well-known Chicago Jewish architect. By the 1920s the company was reported to be the largest manufacturer of garters in the world. The building's clock tower
was a vital resource to riders on the nearby Garfield Park “el” line. They would write to the company and complain if the clock showed the wrong time.
