After the Vietnamese military occupied Cambodia, the U.S. opposed it. In the Mid 1980's the U.S. insurgents against the newly formed Vietnamese rule. The Khmer Rouge remained the strongest of the 3 insurgent groups. The Khmer Rouge was backed by the U.S. and China through money and military aid. In December 1984 the Vietnamese launched a major offensive against the Khmer Rouge, and Pol Pot fled to Thailand.
