During 1998 and early 1999 the “ethnic cleansings” of Kosovo’s Albanians were vast. There was mass execution of civilians, rape, murder, and mass destruction of property. Areas tied to the Kosovo Liberation Party were hardest hit. The vast majority of the victims were males, although women and children were not exempt from the genocide. There were three motives for the massacres of Albania, 1)Ethnic cleanising.2.)Targeting individuals suspected of participating in the KLA and 3.) Revenge. Death Tolls: At first the death toll was around 100,000 but it was eventually pared down the number to a little over 10,000. The Yugoslave president Slobodan Milosevic and four other members of the government were charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for crimes against humanity, forcible transport, and persecution. In fall of 2003 the trials continued as people lower down were tried for crimes against humanity and violations of the cusoms of war. The ICTY charged many of the KLA members for crimes against identity. IN March of 2005 a U.N. tribunal was conducted that indicted the Kosovo Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj for war crimes against the Serbs.
Milosevic survived after the war but he lost a lot of popularity. He was arrested and later tried in 2006. After the conclusion to the war Kosovo showed weakness in NATO and it reassured the U.S.’s military dominance.
