This hill is one of the most sacred sites in India. Thiruvannamalai as the region is known has been home to many yogis seeking spiritual liberation. Every full moon night, tens of thousands of pilgrims worship Shiva by circumambulating the Arunachala hill barefoot. The circumambulation covers a distance of about 14 km.
