Smith, “Dan” Danny D., 73, of New Martinsville, WV died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at his campground in Ashley, WV.

Dan was born January 28, 1935 in Salem, WV the son of the late Thomas Arthur and Sylvia Roxanna Riffee Smith.

Dan was retired co-owner of Dan’s Auto Sales on Rt.2 New Martinsville and a co-owner of Ashley Campground in Ashley, WV, he started in the music industry at the young age of 17 and his first live broadcast was on WMMN in Fairmont; for several years he hosted the Gospel Jubilee on radio WETZ, for over fifty years he was the leader of the Chaparral Band, he and country Johnny Mathis were the co-authors of the song Black Sheep; he performed at the Wheeling Jamboree; past member of the Musicians Union Moundsville Local #496; attended Indian Creek Southern Baptist Church and was a member of Cascara Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eldred; sister, Dortha June and one nephew.

Surviving are his wife of fifty years Alice June Taylor Smith; three children, JuDeen Cox and her husband, Richard of Buckhannon, WV, Dena Smith-Toll and her husband, James of Enterprise, WV and “Duke” Danny D. Smith, Jr. of New Martinsville, WV; four grandchildren, Greg Hamilton of SanDiego, CA, Amanda Currey of Shirley, WV, Cassie Underwood and Jamie Anderson of Salem, WV; great grandson Daniel Underwood of Salem, WV; three sisters, Helena Hunt of Fontana, CA, Eva Holley of Sebring, FL and Linda K Frazier and her husband, Greg of Vienna, WV; brother, Randall Smith and his wife, Kim of Weirton, WV and several nieces and nephews.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2008, Jarvis Funeral Home, Paden City, WV. Friends will then be received 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at the Harbert Funeral Home in Salem, WV where services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008 with Pastors Bobby Thomas and Lester Stinebiser officiating.

Interment Odd Fellows Memorial Park Salem in Salem, WV.
