Before people discovered oil and electricity, people used coal to heat their homes, to make light and to run their engines. Many people came to Drumheller in search of coal. There were many coal mines in the valley, one of them is named the Atlas Coal Mine. Sometimes coal mines could be very dangerous. Since coal has stopped being a source of fuel, oil mining has taken its place in Drumheller.
