Carvings By Benno Schotz,
Bank Of Scotland,
235 Sauchiehall Street
This building was designed by the architect Graham Henderson and completed in 1931. The sculptor Benno Schotz was commissioned to make sculptures for the facade of the building. The stone carvings you can see here on the left have been made of several blocks of sandstone joined together, as one large piece of stone of the right quality would be expensive and hard to find. The faces on the two figures are quite unlike some other faces you would see on sculptures. These faces are more stylised - compare them with the faces on the Scottish Widows building. You can see more of Benno Schotz's work at Mercat Buildings, and in Kelvingrove Park.
