Bank of Scotland Building

When the Bank of Scotland moved out of this building, it was turned into a pub. But the bank's statues and crests still survive. The architect J. T. Rochead (1814-1878) designed the building in 1870. The sculptor William Mossman (1793-1851) carved the huge figures around the door. The powerful men supporting the Bank's crest are called "Atlantes", and give a feeling of strength to the entrance. The Bank's crest is placed between two robed women, who support a giant cornucopia. Over each window, you can see an arch shaped tympanum which is carved out in the shape of a conch shell. Over these, you can see many small portrait heads projecting out from the walls. Look out for other banks on this trail...
