Banner Health Research Administration (BHRA) exists to support the development of research activities conducted by physicians and research investigators at Banner Health hospitals. BHRA maintains oversight of all in-patient research studies performed at a Banner Health hospital including research studies in bariatric, bone marrow transplant, cancer, endocrinology, cardiology, neurobiology/neuroengineering, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, pulmonology, primary care, surgery, toxicology, pediatrics, and the use of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner in brain and Alzheimer’s disease research. Banner Health locations throughout Arizona include: Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Page, Phoenix, Scottsdale and the Sun Cities.
Sun Health merged with Banner Health in September 2008, the facility names have changed: Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center (formerly Sun Health Del E. Webb Hospital) and Banner Boswell Medical Center (formerly Sun Health Boswell Hospital). In addition to Boswell and Del E. Webb hospitals, the operational entities joining Banner include Sun Health Research Institute, Sun Health Medisun, Sun Health Boswell Rehabilitation Center, Sun Health Residence for Alzheimer’s Care, Sun Health Residence for Special Adults, Sun Health Olive Branch Senior Center, Sun Health Community Education & Wellness Center and others.
The Sun Health Research Institute (SHRI) was founded in 1986 as a private, non-profit biomedical research center dedicated to the study of age-related diseases. Scientists at SHRI have had a significant impact on how physicians diagnose and treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and arthritis. The Institute also runs a Brain Donation Program, which has provided researchers in Sun City and around the world with brain tissue to aid in their search for the cause and cure of those diseases.
