The province of Battambang was completely liberated from the genocidal regime on January 13, 1979. At that time, the People’s Committee of commune-Sangkat was founded through the first-ever elections in 1983. Between 1979 and 1986, Battambang had 9 districts and one provincial town.

2. Victims included anyone associated with the old regime, the educated, the vietnamese, the Muslim cham, the Buddhist Monks, and other "bourgeois elements". They were targeted because Salath Sar (Pol Pot) was esssentially looking to turn the clock backwards and maintain a simpler communist society. He got rid of the educated because they were not a 'clean slate', the vietnamese because they could corrupt his aim, and the Muslims and Buddhists due to their religion.
