Black Rock Point Hot Springs

Address:
Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA

Category: Hot Springs-unsoakable

Used in the following map:

C/O Hiking & Soaking in the Western U.S. & Canada

GPS GeoCoords: 40.973870,-119.009634

Near the southern end of an 8 mile long geological fault along the east edge of the desert, lies Black Rock Point . . . the remains of a plug volcano that erupted once, got plugged by it's cooling lava and now remains slowing eroding into it's characteristic cone shape of black. The springs lie almost at the foot of this volcano, testament to the writhing heat energies still moving about somewhere underground.

Like Double Hot Springs at the northern terminus of this fault, Black Rock HS are unsoakable . . . the temperatures in excess of 140F. But the pool is mesmerizing and a must see. This is also the southern leg of the Applegate Trail that followed the fault down the eastern edge of the Black Rock Desert and the well-preserved remains of a weathered covered-wagon can be seen of the site . . . a legally-protected historic relic so don't touch!

There are many other hot springs along this fault worth investigating (none of them soakable). 4-wheel drive, high-clearance is highly suggested as well as two spare tires, extra gas and extra water. You don't want to be trapped out in the middle of nowhere, 25 miles from the nearest gas station.
