4. Boer War Memorial, Kelvingrove Park
The Boer Wars (1880-1881 & 1899-1902) were fought in what is now South Africa. The wars were fought between Britain and two regions called Transvaal and Orange Free State, both of which wished to be independent of Britain.
The Boer Wars were very bloody. In the first 14 months of the second Boer War, 11,000 British soldiers died. Most of them died of dysentery or fever - only a third died in battle.
This memorial is a great standing stone with a carved British soldier on top. It was sculpted by William Birnie Rhind (1853-1933) and erected in 1906.
