In March of 1992, 99.4 percent of voters in Bosnia elected to secede from Yugoslavia. However, most Bosnian Serbs boycotted the vote and with the urging of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, decided to make a separate Bosnian Serb state within the borders of old Bosnia. This started the war in which the genocide. As the date of Bosia's independence from Yugoslavia approached, the combined Bosnian Serb and Yugoslav Army began the violence against non-Serbs.
