20th Century Global Conflicts (3rd Period)

(Dara, Melanie, Melissa, Marianna)
The Portuguese invaded Brazil in 1500 to produce sugar cane. African slaves were brought to Brazil making it one of the highest importers. After slavery was abolished, blacks had a hard time finding jobs. In the 1930's, Europeans were brought to Brazil to "whiten" the country with whom they thought was the superior race. Even today it is hard for Blacks to find jobs in Brazil. Also blacks have a higher mortality rate. This event represents sources of racism because of differences in culture, imperialism, boosting economy, and the ideology of "White is Right".
