Bothwell Street
This building is one of the most heavily decorated in Glasgow. It began as the Central Thread Agency and was built between 1891 and 1901, designed by the architects H & D. Barclay. Much of this sandstone building is smothered with fine, bas-relief carving. All kinds of faces, cherubs, floral designs and scrolls can be seen on the front and sides of the building, including Egyptian queens and bearded men in turbans.
When this building was designed the thread industry was much more important and prosperous in Scotland than it is now. This is why the building, now an insurance office, is so elaborate.
