The first mention in history of the O'Ryans is of the O'Ryans of Idrone about the year 1000. Idrone was a medieval barony located in what is now County Carlow. The name Idrone derived from the old Gaelic Hy Drona. The chief of this tribe of O'Ryans was generally referred to as the Lord or King of Idrone.
