Carnegie Library
Address:
215 E Gladys Avenue
Hermiston, OR 97838, USA
Category: Education
The first library in Hermiston was built in 1915 by way of a grant from the Carnegie foundation; Carnegie was owner of one of the biggest steel companies in his time. Carnegie's fortune was used across the country in small towns that needed support for libraries. It was important for farmers and residents in the area because this was the only place they could get books in order to educate themselves. It now serves as the Hermiston building department; the new public library is next door (the purple roof).
