Savona was the scene of an unusual phenomenon: the reutilization and radical alteration of the medieval terraced houses on Via Piana and Via Quarda through the incorporation of the houses behind, restructured and rearranged through the construction of new stairwells and the ample use of vaulting. Examples of this are the Palazzo Grassi Ferrero Lamba Doria, with its loggias with pointed arches (now walled up) on the left of the front facing onto the sea, and the Palazzo Del Carretto Pavese Pozzobonello, also of medieval origin with sixteenth-century alterations and subsequent functional adaptations.
