Cassel 1071, 1328, 1677, 1940

Four major battles have been fought at Cassel: in 1328 involving the army of Philip VI of France and in 1677, that of Philippe I of Orléans. In World War 2, the 2nd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and the 4th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry held Cassel for three days as part of the defensive screen around Dunkirk during the evacuation (27 May 1940-30 May 1940).
