Bellinzona is an ancient Lombard hamlet which is located in the Alps’ chain and can still be considered the Middle-Age corssroads between the Latin and German world. The village has three castles which are regarded as one of the best examples of the fortified Middle-Age fortress architecture. Their present shape is due to the construction activity of the Visconti’s Family – Dukes of Milan – during the 14th and 15th centuries, age to which dates back the construction of a powerful defensive system to protect the Ticino valley from the invasion of the Switzerland Confederates. The above mentioned system has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2000 and continues to amaze tourists and visitors showing its crenelated walls, its towers and doors.
