With its construction it was attempted to fortify the city; threatened from the invasions of the Turks and the Republic of Venice, that they threatened not only Taranto, but all the Puglia. The castle had to rise where already the Bizantini around to the 1907 had constructed one first fortification with high towers and tightened from which it was fought with nozzles, arrows, stones, hot oil, in the higher point of the old city, on the ditch. The high ones and tightened towers because, to the end of 1400 more they were not adapted to the defense, from the moment that had discovered the powder from shoots and the new crews, the guns, for their use had need of towers wide and low and supplied of rampe (species of slides) that they allowed to transport the guns from one easy tower to the other.
