Chalet Hill
Category: Abandoned Ski Areas
**April 2009**
Note: This was the 100th different NELSAP area that I visited! Hooray for milestones!
Trails: Basically nonexistent at this point. This was a VERY old ski area (1930's) and any trails cut since then have long since grown back. The former slopes are now basically impassible with all the brush that has grown in on them.
Lifts: The ski area's ropetow has some remnants scattered on the ground. I was only able to explore where the base drive was because of the new growth on the trails. Very large (and thick) pulley wheel on the ground next to where the motor house was, as well as a few scattered metal pieces that I'm sure had something to do with the operation of the tow.
Facilities: There is a large barn that is now on private property next to the base of the ski area that may once have had something to do with the skiing operation.
Accessibility: The ski area is now located on Fish and Game land, so it is open to the public (wear bright colors though as hunting is permitted in this area). There is a parking area for the reserve about 1/4 of a mile south of the ski area on Dunstable road, but access to the ski area from here (as I found out) was difficult, and I had to cross multiple streams and brooks which were swelling with spring runoff at this point. Probably easier to park on the side of the road near the intersection with Blodgett Street or across from the superfund site, but space is limited.
