Charles Cameron Memorial Fountain, Charing Cross.
Category: Marker/Sign/Street Furniture
Charles Cameron was an MP who served Glasgow and Scotland for over 20 years during 1874 -1895. His popularity has been recognised with this ornate drinking fountain, which was erected by public subscription in 1896. It was made in Doulton terracotta by George Bell and William Clarke and is very finely modelled with scrolls and columns, and a memorial inscription. The copper bronze medallion shows Cameron's profile, made by George Tinworth. Each side also has a clock face, making it an important landmark at this busy junction. You can see that the structure is leaning quite heavily to one side. This area of Glasgow has changed a lot since the fountain was built, and so it is not very well suited to this noisy, cramped and bustling environment.
