The Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX) provides a vital element of competition to the marketplace. Founded May 15, 1882, the CHX has risen to become one of the largest exchanges in the world. It provides an auction market for the purchase and sale of equity securities. Like other stock exchanges, it is the physical location where stocks are traded. The Chicago Stock Exchange currently consists of approximately 200 member organizations (holding 450 seats) and a staff of over 200. It is a self-regulatory organization under the oversight of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Today, the Chicago Stock Exchange trades more than 3,500 NYSE, Amex, Nasdaq and CHX-exclusive issues.
