Cineworld (Formerly UGC Cinema)
Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest
Corner of Renfrew St & West Nile St.
Since the cinema opened on the 21st September 2001, it has impacted greatly on the Glasgow cinema scene. At 200-feet and over 12 stories high, the building boasts an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the Worlds Tallest Cinema. It seats around 4,300 in total, with over 18 screens.
However, despite the buildings impact upon Glasgow's cityscape and entertainment scene, not everyone finds the design aesthetically pleasing...
Architects have criticised the building as being out of scale with its surroundings. In 2000 it was voted Scotland's Carbuncle of the Year and was since voted the least favourite building in Glasgow in 2004.
UGC was taken over by Cineworld in 2005, and the cinema rebranded at that time.
