Clyde Port Authority Building
Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest
Robertson Street
This building is a great example of the grandeur of Victorian Glasgow. It was completed in 1908, to the designs of J. J. Burnet. It has many superb sculptures such as this great figure of Ceres with a bull, and Amphitrite with seahorses by Albert Hodge.
You can see more wonderful sculpture by John Mossman, showing Neptune with seahorses and sculpted boat set into the wall at ground level. Much of the decoration on this building relates to the sea, since it was used as the headquarters of The Clyde Navigation Trust. This was the place where traffic on the river would have been monitored, planned and controlled.
In the detail you can see the strength and vigour of the carving on the pediment. Neptune, the Roman God of the Ocean, represents the city's strong link with the sea and shipping.
