Cromwell Court Milestone

Category: Marker/Sign/Street Furniture

Used in the following map:

Glasgow Woodlands Art Trail

The Milestone For Scotland project has produced many public artworks in various parts of Central Scotland. This piece, by Callum Sinclair and Michelle De Bruin is placed within the housing complex at Cromwell Street near St Georges Cross. It is made of two stone pillars which have been carved with a sun-burst design. It is a simple sundial, and they recall ancient standing stones found in Britain, such as Stonehenge or Calanais, which were used as astronomical guides to plot the course of the sun.

The space around this Milestone is an "informal gathering place for residents", with tables and seating. The piece was commissioned in 1994 by Cromwell Court Residents Group. It is a Milestone For Scotland Project, initiated in 1990 by Glasgow Sculpture Studios.
