Completed in the summer of 1895, the Mechanical Building or Crosby Hall was designed by the first president of A&T, John Oliver Crosby. This building used steam heat and gas lighting. It was called the finest structure of its kind in the southern states. The name of the college in 1895 was A and M College for the Colored Race.
