"Diagram Of An Object" by Dhruva Mistry,
Entrance To Hunterian Art Gallery
Dhruva Mistry is an Indian sculptor, born in Gujarat in 1957. "Diagram Of An Object" is a bronze cast sculpture based on the enduring theme of a mother and child. But this one is a little different. It is an abstract sculpture, and there are no details like eyes or fingers as you might see on figurative sculptures. Also, the figure of the mother is made to look a little like a chair, as though the child is sitting down. The sculpture is nearly 3 metres tall and is made in several hollow sections which are then joined together, welded, and finally polished smooth. The piece was commissioned by the Hunterian Art Gallery to celebrate the European City Of Culture in 1990. Dhruva Mistry lives and works in England, and also created a series of enormous sculptures in the main square of the City Of Birmingham.
