These springs are also known as the Applegate Twin Hot Springs. They are two small pools in the desert first discovered in 1849 by explorers looking for a new route to California . . . the Applegate Trail through Black Rock Desert as a southern alternative to the Oregon Trail.

The water is beautiful and inviting in the hot dry desert but like most things out there it is a death trap. The springs are at 140F and can cause third degree burns in seconds. Many people have lost their lives falling in on the slippery sides . . . according to an old rusty sign.

However, enterprising souls have taken it upon themselves to cart in a soaking tub that more safely draws spring water at a more comfortable soaking temperature arounf 104F. Even the rangers love soaking in this remote tub at the north end of the playa.
