Garnethill Lighting Project.
Here in Garnethill, the lamp-posts have been uniquely enhanced by her castings of small birds on the horizontal spars of the lamps. These "chookie-burdies" are sensitively placed on each lamp to indicate a sense of continuity throughout the area, and give a calm and natural feeling to what is very much an urban housing area.
The chubby, puffed-up shapes of the birds and their relaxed stance are comforting. Birds do not rest for long in noisy, aggressive or dangerous environments, and so the presence of these unreal birds can be soothing to the viewer. This project gives a distinct identity to Garnethill, since only the lamp-posts within this area have these birds on them. But the birds are also a reference to the city's Coat Of Arms, which reminds you that you are still very much in Glasgow. All of this makes Garnethill a more enjoyable place to live and work in, and an interesting place to visit too.
