Category: Genocide
After the genocide had been put to a halt, many of the participants were tried for numerous war crimes, including: crimes against humanity, genocide, and mass murder. Of all the people tried for genocide, most entered plea bargains to be convicted only of crimes against humanity. Of the three major players in the genocide, only Slobodan Milosevic was actually tried. He died in a detention cell in The Hague before he was convicted of anything. The two other major players, Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, were able to flee from Serbia instead of facing trial. Both the UN and the US have offered $5 million rewards for information regarding their whereabouts.
Overall, 200,000 people of the former Yugoslavia died in the war since 1992 and over 40,000 are still missing.
