8. Govan War Memorial, Govan Road
This simple war memorial takes the form of an octagonal (eight-sided) pillar topped with an obelisk. Standing on top of the obelisk is a unicorn with a shield. This memorial was erected after the First World War. Govan became part of Glasgow in 1912, but Govan erected its own war memorial to remember the men of the burgh who died in the Great War. The Govan Coat-Of-Arms can be seen on the greenish bronze plaque. Small soldiers heads project outwards from the stone, with expressions of pain on their faces. Compare this memorial with the Cenotaph in George Square, or the war memorial at Bearsden Cross. They are all different, but they all have the same purpose - to remember those lost in war.
