Grecian Chambers, 336-356 Sauchiehall Street
This building was designed by the architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson (1817-1875) and finished in 1865. Thomson designed many buildings in Glasgow, but some have been demolished. He is now regarded as a great Glaswegian architect in the same league as Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Although it is called Grecian Chambers, a lot of the details are actually in an Egyptian style. The small pillars on the top floor have fine fretwork and floral carvings around them. The pediments on the roof have small akroterions projecting upwards. The building is in blond sandstone and was restored for the new Centre For Contemporary Arts.
