Cairns detectives are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault that occurred on New Years Eve, just prior to midnight on December 31, 2010. A 15-year-old girl and a friend were seated on the steps of the Ergon building in Lake Street, Cairns near the Taxi rank when they were approached by three women and asked for a cigarette. A brief conversation was had prior to the girl being punched in the mouth. She sustained a broken jaw and required surgery. The three women are described as being of Islander appearance, with dark complexion, afro hair in a pulled back style, all aged between 20-30-years and solid build. One was described as being 170cm and wearing a black dress with white detail on the front. A second woman was described as 155cm, wearing a blue singlet, coloured board shorts with ‘Billabong’ printed down the leg seam. The third was approx 175cm and was wearing a rainbow multi-coloured shirt dress. A number of people were waiting at the taxi rank at the time of the incident.
