Excited Vineyard residents flocked to see the new resort hotel on Starbuck's Neck in the days before its grand opening on June 22, 1891. They marveled at the comfortable bedrooms, the gaslights in every room and the size of the public parlors. "Built on a generous scale", the advertisements said. The hotel is credited with beginning Edgartown's climb to fame as a summer resort. Then as now, guests enjoy the ambiance, the almost palpable history and the panoramic views from the Harbor View Hotel. The proud dignity of the Island's Grand Dame of hospitality lives on today.
