Historical European Martial Arts (Northern Europe)

HEMA Cph is a martial arts club working on reconstructing armed and unarmed combat with roots in European history from 13th to 16th century.

Our main focus is fencing with the longsword and sword and buckler. Other weapons we use are dagger, poleaxe, longstaff and spear amongst others.

We only train what will work in real combat, which means we prefer simple and direct moves instead of ornamental and flashy ones.

Our philosophy is that if it is simple and effective, you have a great chance of winning, and so it has been through history in life and death matters.

The German fencing tradition (Liechtenauer), which has existed for several centuries, fits our demands for an proven, effective and realistic combat system, and therefore it lays the foundation for most of our principles and approach to longsword - for sword and buckler we primarily rely on the I.33 manual. We also study other sources such as Hans Talhoffer, Paulus H. Mair, Paulus Kal to mention a few
