Brookline History

Begun in 1887, this complex was the home of the Holtzer-Cabot Electric Company. Built by German immigrant Charles Holtzer opposite the railroad station, it was the town’s largest factory, manufacturing small electric motors, equipment for the growing telephone and radio communication industries, and other devices.

In 1891, one of the first electric cars built in the United States – perhaps the first built for actual use and not as an experimental or demonstration model – was made here for Brookline resident Fiske Warren. The Holtzer-Cabot factory moved to Jamaica Plain in 1915.
