Gabriele d'Annunzio intended this monumental ensemble as a genuine citadel. The Vittoriale comprises the house of the poet, parks and gardens, relics, works of art and the d’Annunzio museum. The residence, which has been transformed and decorated by the poet himself, is a rare testimony of his personage and of a period. The house has kept the original interior decoration and the poet’s personal belongings, including a library counting more than 33 000 volumes. As an unusual scenographic monument the ship Puglia emerges from the greenery on the promontory, with its prow pointing towards the lake; the Royal Navy donated it to d’Annunzio.
