Where Venerable Bede lived in the 8th century. In 1859, the year Adam Bede was published, Cardinal Wiseman, Catholic primate of England, petitioned the Holy See to make Bede a Doctor of the Church. This did not happen until 1899. Alfred the Great had Bede's Ecclesiastical History translated into Anglo Saxon. -- Peter Alfred Biggins
