United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis lived here with his wife Myrta and daughter Katherine. It was the site for many key meetings and historic decisions in the development of the American labor movement, such as the strike to win gains like health care and safety protection for UMWA members, the decision to organize Big Steel into the United Steel Workers of America, and the establishment of the Congress of Industrial Organizations.
