Kvaerner Shipyard

Category: Contemporary Public Art

Used in the following map:

Glasgow Clydeside and Govan Public Art Trail

12. Kvaerner Shipyard, Govan Road

The Kvaerner Shipyard used to be called Fairfields and opened in 1864. The buildings along Govan Road were designed by John Keppie (1862-1945) and constructed in 1891. The two sculpted figures on either side of the doorway are of a shipwright and an engineer, standing on the prows of ships with the tools of their trade around them. The bearded head on the keystone over the door depicts a maritime figure representing the spirit of the ocean.
