London is the capital and largest urban area of both England and the United Kingdom. An important settlement for two millennia, London’s history goes back to its founding by the Romans.
Although there is evidence of scattered Brythonic settlements in the area, the first major settlement was founded by the Romans in AD 43 as Londinium, following the Roman conquest of Britain. Since its settlement, London has been part of many movements and phenomena throughout history, including the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. The city’s core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries.

London is a major international air transport hub. London Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the world for international traffic, and is the major hub of the nation’s flag carrier, British Airways.
