Lord Clyde (1792-1863)
To the east of the figure of Sir John Moore stands a statue commemorating Field Marshal Lord Clyde, another great soldier and native of Glasgow. The sculpture was made by JH Foley (1818-1874) in London in 1867, and erected in 1868. The figure stands by a palm tree stump, with a scroll in his left hand and his pith helmet in his right hand. He wears high boots, a military tunic and a sword. Lord Clyde was said to be one of the greatest British soldiers of the 19th century, and he is buried in Westminster Abbey.
