Man arrested after assaulting Dog Squad Officer

Cairns Detectives yesterday charged a 40-year-old man following an alleged assault on a police officer. The man was allegedly intercepted as part of a routine traffic stop on Aeroglen Drive at approximately 12.45 yesterday afternoon. The man allegedly fled from police and was located hiding under a desk at a nearby business after being tracked by a police dog and handler. The man allegedly failed to comply with police requests and struck the officer before becoming involved in a struggle with the police officer forcing him to the ground. Witnesses assisted the officer in restraining the man. The police officer sought treatment for a shoulder injury. The man is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court today charged with serious assault on a police officer, trespass, possession of a dangerous drug, two counts of obstruct police and five counts of breach of bail.
