A 36-year-old Westcourt man is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 7 after allegedly assaulting a taxi driver early on Thursday morning. It is alleged the man got into the cab at a city rank and then assaulted the driver whilst travelling along Florence Street. Police crews arrested the man at the scene after the 20-year-old driver was able to flee the vehicle and raise the alarm. He sustained facial swelling and bruising as a result of the incident. The alleged offender was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm; wilful damage and evading a cab fare.
